They say you don't win a cup competition without a bit of luck along the way. Well if Netherton go on to lift the Northants Cup this year they will know they used up their lion share of luck in this game.
Netherton started the game well enough and were on top without being at their best, their opponents looked dangerous from set pieces but apart from that offered nothing in attack. The quality of Netherton's football deteriorated as the half went on, they lacked their normal fluidity and players they normally rely on we're under performing. Even though they weren't at their best Netherton still created chances and one of those was taken on the on the stroke of half time, Jon Kerrison done a little one two with Ryan Wood just outside the box and amazingly toe punted the return pass into the top of the net.
HT 1-0
There was no improvement in Netherton's play at the beginning of the second half and you could sense that if their opponents could string some passes together they could get back into the game. In the end the visitors didn't need to produce any quality of their own to bring the scores level, indeed they were gifted their equaliser, a mixture of poor defending and some indecisive goalkeeping resulted in the Corby striker bundling the ball home.
The game became very open with both teams creating half chances without taking them, then with 12 minutes left the visitors took the lead, it was another poor goal for the home side to concede. Netherton losing possession on the edge of their own box, the ball was then crossed in only for Ryan Wood to divert it into his own net. Netherton quickly responded and 5 minutes later they had their equaliser through Tommy Randall. After being brought down in the box for a penalty, he got up and converted on 84 minutes. The visitors has one more attack in the game and a long ball flicked on put their striker clean through on goal. Chris Hansford chased him all the way back then climbed all over him as the striker was about to shoot, the striker got his shot off as he went over but it was an easy save for keeper Ross Ingram to make. This was in the penalty area an really should of resulted in a penalty for Corby and Hansford being sent off. Instead play just went on, this was the last chance of the game, and it went straight to penalties.
Things were going well for the home side as Captain Herbie Panting stepped up first and put his away, the first Corby taker then had his penalty well saved by Ross Ingram. Ash Jackson, Scott Taylor, and Tommy Randall then scored their penalties as did the other three takers for Corby, which left Ben Daly with the chance to put Netherton through, but he failed to do so. The Corby player scored and we were into sudden death, Roberto Da Silva scored, as did their player. Then the next bit of luck came for the home side, Lee Clementson stepped up an struck a poor penalty that was saved by the Corby keeper only for the official linesman to say the keeper had come of his line early so the kick had to be retaken. Video evidence captured by a supporter showed that the linesman was correct, it was harsh on the away keeper but correct nevertheless. Clementson then showed good bottle to finally put his penalty away. Mij Akbar cooly put his penalty away as did the away player, scores were now level at 6-6, Netherton then had some more luck as keeper Ingram stepped up an hit a terrible penalty that somehow found a way through the Corby keeper. Ingram then saved the next kick to send the Home side through to the semi finals to the relief of their Manager.
