ICA 2-2 Netherton

Tough encounter for Netherton ends in a draw!

This was always going to be a tough encounter for Netherton, and so it proved. ICA came out all guns blazing, their front two were willing to chase everything down, and their efforts inspired the rest of the team to do the same. Netherton weren't able to get a foot in the game, but that wasn't helped by what manager Jon Harrison described as " the worst 30 minutes of football he'd ever witnessed from his team"

ICA took the lead on 7 minutes after slack defending allowed winger Josh Smith to get a cross in, it took a slight deflection an rocketed into the top corner, ICA were on top and feeding off the away sides nervousness to keep the pressure on. It paid off when more slack defending from Netherton let in Smith again who clinically finished to make it two on 15 minutes. The next 15 minutes was much the same as the last, with ICA continuing to attack, and Netherton barely able to string three passes together. That all changed on 31 minutes, when Netherton were awarded a free kick 35 yards out. Dan Fountain stepped up an smashed it goal wards, the shot was to hot for the keeper to handle and he could only parry it for Jon Kerrison to tap in. That was the game changing moment and from that moment on wards it was all Netherton, infact Netherton could count themselves unlucky not to go in at half time 2-2 after having, what seemed a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside. Tommy Randall had already capitalised on a mistake from the home keeper and slotted the ball home before the home linesman lifted his flag. This was the last bit of action before half time. HT: 2-1

ICA had a succession of corners in the first couple of minutes of the second half, but the half was all about Netherton trying to score goals, and ICA hanging on. The Netherton pressure was non stop an the football they were playing in terrible conditions was a joy to watch. Netherton got the equaliser on the hour mark, Tommy Randall finishing smartly from a low cross from Ryan Wood. Netherton were unlucky not to take the lead 5 minutes later when Randall broke away down the left, he crossed it to the totally unmarked Fountain, but the striker misjudged the bounce an was unable to control the ball. On 75 minutes Netherton had the perfect chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty, Randall stepped up and hit it well, but saw the ball crash against the post. The last 10 minutes was all out Netherton attack, but they weren't able to fashion out any real clear cut chances, and to their credit ICA defended resolutely and saw the game out to earn a point they will be very happy with.

Netherton will have to start the match a lot better when they visit champions Moulton next Saturday if they are to get anything from the game.
