Netherton lost nothing in defeat, to a side flying high, two divisions above them. Indeed they gained many admirers for the way they stuck to their principles of playing football.
Netherton knew if they were to have a chance against Deeping they had to be brave in possession and from the back to the front and that's exactly what they were.
Manager Jon Harrison praised his back four in particular Saying "When you play against a front three of Deepings quality it would be easy to just panic an launch it up field but they listened to the instructions given, kept hold of the ball so we enjoyed good spells of possession" he added "Chris Hansford was the best player on show, he was backed up well by the other defenders, and huge second half performance from goal keeper Ross Ingram, the whole team played really well an thoroughly enjoyed the challenge."
The teams went in level at half time neither side having any clear cut opportunities, at times it was hard to tell which team was at the top of the UCL and what team was at the top of the Peterborough Premier League with both teams playing some great football on a pitch that wasn't really worthy of them.
HT 0-0
The second half began the same as the first with both teams getting the ball down an playing football, but 5mins in Netherton lost possession of the ball on the right with four of their players around the ball. Deeping quickly worked the ball to the left and Coupland was played in and finished smartly. It remained 1-0 until 74 mins when a sweeping move that ended with a great cross from the left an tidy finish from Mooney. It was getting really hard for Netherton to get back into the game with Deepings superior fitness and quality coming through, but credit to Netherton as they kept going right to the end, altho they had keeper Ross Ingram to thank for the scoreline staying the same, he made a string of exceptional saves.
Netherton are back in league action this week at home to Stilton, an Harrison will be hoping his side play to the same level they did against Deeping when they play a team from the same level as them.
