JPL Elite League (North) Fixture: Guiseley (2) Vs Netherton United FC U15 (2) Venue: Leeds University Date: 19 January 2019 Time: 12:15pm

Coaches Simon Roberts/Colin Thomas with their Netherton squad headed 120 miles north to West Yorkshire to play this fixture on the coldest day of the year with temperatures barely above zero.

Netherton were caught cold early as within 2 minutes of the kick off, a foul resulted in a free kick for the home side. The delivery into the box found an unmarked Ethan Kaya who finished it without any fuss. 1-0

Guiseley continued their quick start and played the ball rapidly to their skilful and strong No 9 Jakub who went close to doubling the lead with a powerful strike just missing the target by inches.

Slowly but surely Netherton acclimatised to their surroundings and started to string a few passes together and a quick-fire move resulted in captain Danyaal Younus warming the Guiseley stoppers hands with a clean strike.

Netherton were now displaying more urgency and the reward arrived in the 8th minute. A flowing move from defence through the midfield lines found Jakub Nowicki who was strong in retaining possession and let off a fierce drive which flew past the Guiseley stopper. 1-1

Guiseley didn’t panic and were showing a maturity in their play and attacking prowess. One particular sweeping move found their No 12 Frankie who was unlucky not to score with the strike going inches wide.

The home side was attacking in waves and Nethertons strong centre half Wayne Cort was caught off guard with the speed of an opposition attacker and brought him down, earning the only booking of the game. The resulting free kick was defended well by the Netherton wall.

The game was being played at a decent pace by both sides and the first quarter closed with a Lukas Vaickelionis pile driver which went fractionally wide of the upright.

The second quarter was more good football by both teams but remained a stalemate with the only chance of the quarter coming from Guiseley with Harvey Kneeshaw going close with a terrific strike only to be thwarted by the commanding Netherton stopper Bartosz Berezowski.

Half Time 1-1

The third quarter continued in the same vain as the second with not much goalmouth action however the game was being contested in midfield with Netherton debutant Ethan Camfield giving a confident assured performance.

Netherton grew stronger near the end of the quarter with top scorer Viliam Radic testing the Guiseley keeper with blistering pace and a rocket of a shot which just clipped the woodwork.

Netherton continued the onslaught, and the stalemate was broken in the 53rd minute, when a Tiki/Taka passing movement involving Hashim Hussain/Viliam Radic/Danyaal Younus ended with a sublime finish from Lukas Vaickelionis. 1-2.

Guiseley however were not finished as they upped the ante and sliced through the Netherton defence and their No 9 Jakub fired off one heck of a shot destined to bulge the back of the net.
However, they didn’t account for the fantastic reading of the situation by Wayne Cort who threw himself into harm’s way and blocked the shot. A certain goal thwarted. Stunning defending.

Simon Roberts made changes for the 4th quarter due to injury and rotation. The final quarter was one-way traffic with Guiseley continuing to force the game and as it wore on it seemed Netherton had the heavier legs.

The Netherton backline quartet of Loui Catt/Wayne Cort/Harvey Henderson/Josh Wilson were very strong and composed but every time the ball was cleared it came back immediately and finally in the 78th minute the Guiseley Talisman Jakub poked home the equaliser and the Netherton resistance was finally breached. A well-deserved equaliser to share the spoils. The referee blew his whistle to end this magnificent fixture shortly after. 2-2

The supporters of both teams had witnessed the best of grassroots football. Neither team deserved to lose the game. Well done to everyone involved including the referee who was excellent. Good luck to Guiseley for the rest of the season.

A special mention for Bartosz “Bart” Berezowski Nethertons outstandingly talented keeper who is joining the Peterborough United Academy on an initial 18-month contract This was his his last game for Netherton United. He will be missed not just as a player but also for his infectious personality.

Serdecznie pozdrawiam (Best Wishes) to Bart and his family from the Netherton United family.
